RBH: Congratulations on receiving the Bio Complex Oil Treatment 12 amp! Why was this particular item on your wish list?

 Dawn:  This is something that I have heard nothing but good things about so I want to try it for myself. Everyone I know that used it says that it works awesome so I really want to try it.

RBH: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your Hair.

 Dawn: Well, first of all, I just want to say that I am excited and humbled about winning this month! I totally support Jennifer and her vision.

Well I am from the Capital of Dominican Hair Salons…. New York, but now live in North Carolina. I have been going to Dominican inspired salons since 1993 when I used to go to East Harlem and a shop called ‘Shampoo’ that is now called ‘Eddie Jrs Salon’ and pretty much from there my hair just made a turn for the better. My hair is not course but it has a little bit of thickness to it and I can go without a relaxer for six months at a time. Recently, I just did a Keratin Treatment and it was the best decision I have made for my hair. This treatment is organic and doesn’t have the formaldehyde that the others do so there was none of that chemical stuff. I will never go back to a chemical relaxer ever again.

RBH:  What’s the biggest difference you’ve noticed in your hair since using Dominican hair products? 

Dawn:  The biggest difference is that my hair has grown in ways that when I was younger, I didn’t think that it could! It is truly for OUR hair; I don’t care if you are African American, Dominican, Boricua, or like me Panamanian….the products work with our hair to get it to its optimum level. 

RBH: Do you still go to a Dominican Salon since you’re no longer in New York? 

Dawn:  Yes, I do; and a shout out to Belkys! She is a blessing to me, it was hard for me when I relocated to Charlotte, because coming from Brooklyn, NY, you just have a standard and at first, some of the Dominican salons in Charlotte, just were not meeting my standards at all and I was so ready to just give up, but I did my research and tried Belky’s out, and she is the truth! She can do some hair and she has integrity which you don’t see a lot in the industry because people just want your money. She sets her clock by me, because I go every week unless I’m on vacation.

RBH:  Can you share with us your weekly hair regimen?

Dawn:  My weekly hair regimen is to do my pre oils before I go to the salon. I use the Apretol Aceite de Canela y Romero Oil 4oz directly on my scalp because it tends to be dry and itchy; and the Whale Sperm Oil [now called Formula Marina] on my hair, which makes my hair shine like glass. I go to the salon but I bring my own products. I use non SLS shampoo and for deep conditioning I use one of the following: Salerm Wheat Germ Hair Mask Conditioning Treatment 6.74oz, Silicon Mix Conditioner 8oz or Toque Magico Emergencia w/Coconut Conditioner 16oz …it all depends on what’s going on with my hair. I make sure I get my roller set every week because it’s an investment in my hair and therefore an investment in me. Sometimes I will do a deep conditioner and the oils as a pre shampoo treatment which, I swear it makes your hair soft and silky.

DominicanHairCare: Congratulations Ashanta you’ve won the Biotina Magic Hair Combo! What made you want to try these products? 

Ashanta: I decided to include it on my wish list after it made its debut on Dominicanhaircare.com.This product was featured as a sulfate-free hair care line. With all the talk of the benefits of sulfate-fee products, I figured I would give it a try.

DominicanHairCare: How would you describe your hair?

Ashanta: At this this time, my relaxed hair is shoulder length. It remains healthy as long as I keep my ends clipped.

DominicanHairCare: How long have you being using Dominican Products?

 Ashanta: I have used Dominican salons and products for over 10 years. Living in New York, the Dominican salon was simply the place to go.

 DominicanHairCare: What’s the biggest difference you’ve noticed in your hair since using Dominican hair products?

Ashanta: I immediately noticed a difference in the length and manageability of my tresses.  I have been hooked ever since.   

 DominicanHairCare: Do you go to a Dominican hair salon?

 Ashanta: Unfortunately, I no longer reside in New York (true home of the doobie and blow-out) and there is no Dominican salon within reasonable distance. On rare occasions, I will make an out of state trek just to visit a Dominican salon. When I lived in New York, I visited my stylist weekly, and my hair was at its optimum state.

 DominicanHairCare: What’s your weekly hair regimen now?

Ashanta:  I wash and condition, followed by a long stay under a dryer.  I absolutely abhor the flatiron, and avoid its use.  I love finishing my hair with a light gloss. I moisturize my scalp, as needed, with natural oils.
